This week, Dua Lipa manages to get us all even more excited for the upcoming Barbie film with the summery, shimmering “Dance the Night.”

We’ve finally got a candidate for song of the summer.

Dua Lipa is set to star as Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming movie. But before that, she has a new song to share with us. It’s called “Dance the Night” and it’s a perfect mix of synth-pop and disco. This song shows why Dua Lipa is one of the best pop stars right now. Her album Future Nostalgia had many songs like this and we loved them all. And this new song proves that she still has the magic to make us dance and feel good.

The music video shows a joyful, slick routine during the chorus, mixed with scenes from a dance performance that the movie promises. The song opens with dramatic strings until a rhythm descends that almost shouts choreography. “Dance the Night” is the first taste of the soundtrack for Gerwig’s Barbie, which also includes songs from Ryan Gosling as our Ken and works by Charli XCX, Lizzo, HAIM, and more. “City of Stars” had adequately prepared him for just this situation!

We know that Greta Gerwig has a strong voice as a writer and a distinct viewpoint as a filmmaker, and a recent interview with Vogue gave us an insight into the mindset she was in when writing the script for the movie about the famed Mattell doll: Gerwig makes allusions to feminist philosophy, the Genesis creation narrative, and her struggle with death. She’s not here to mess around, just like Dua Lipa wasn’t when she was making this single. In the pink, disco-themed music video, Gerwig also makes a brief appearance.

Girlhood and growing up have their challenges (as Margot Robbie’s Barbie seems to find out in the movie), but they also have a lot of joy, and we should always celebrate them. How about this Barbie then? Until I can enter the theater on
